Doubling Amoebas Amoebas are one-celled animals that reproduce by dividing in two. One amoeba becomes two, two become four, and so on. If they have enough food, amoebas can double their population every 24 hours. If you start with just one amoeba in a jar of pond water at 10 A.M. on Monday morning, how many amoebas are in the jar by Wednesday of the next week at 10 A.M.? (Assume that none die.)

Mission Statement

The mission of this class is to provide an array of knowledge, develop each individual to their full potential and provide a foundation for each student to become life long learners and responsible citizens.

Answer to the Amoebas

There are 512 amoebas by Wednesday of the next week.

Nine days pass between Monday and the next Wednesday, so the amoebas have a chance to double their population nine times:

Monday: 1 amoeba
Tuesday: 1 × 2 = 2 amoebas
Wednesday: 2 × 2 = 4 amoebas
Thursday: 4 × 2 = 8 amoebas
Friday: 8 × 2 = 16 amoebas
Saturday: 16 × 2 = 32 amoebas
Sunday: 32 × 2 = 64 amoebas
Monday: 64 × 2 = 128 amoebas
Tuesday: 128 × 2 = 256 amoebas
Wednesday: 256 × 2 = 512 amoebas
